Acacia Gum - (See Gum Arabic.)
African Butter - (See Shea Butter.)
Alfalfa Extract - Natural cleanser and mild exfoliant high in vitamins A, B, C, D and E and minerals. Used in face masks, bath oils, creams and lotions, alfalfa is also rich in protein, which makes it an excellent ingredient for hair care products. Contains saponins (natural foaming agents).
Algae Extract — A blend of three varieties of red algae—Chondrus crispus (Irish moss), Euchema and Gigartina—that grow along the Atlantic coast of Europe and North America. High in iodine and amino acids, algae extract is very nourishing and soothing to the skin. Also used as a thickener and stabilizer in cosmetic preparations.
Allantoin— Extract from comfrey used in celltherapy treatments, face creams and suncare preparations as a healing agent and moisturizer. An antiinflammatory and antiirritant, allantoin is reported to promote skin cell regeneration. It can also be made from uric acid, but the comfrey root type is superior. The finest quality allantoin is free of pyrrolizidine alkaloids.
Allspice — Pimenta officinalis. The ground, dried berries of an evergreen tree indigenous to the West Indies. Often used as a spice or fragrance, it also acts as a scalp tonic.
Almond Butter -The butter made from almond oil, a superb emollient and skin conditioner.
Almond Meal -The ground extract of the almond kernel, used in face masks as a mild exfoliant.
Almond Oil-Excellent emollient high in oleic, linoleic and other fatty acids, ideal in the treatment of very dry skin. Soothing and moisturizing, with a sweet, pleasant fragrance. A good absorption base.
Aloe, Aloe Vera, Aloe Vera Oil — Aloe barbadensis. In the first century A.D., Roman naturalist Pliny wrote extensively about aloe as a healing agent for wounds and abrasions. It is considered one of nature's most effective remedies for sunburn and skin irritations, and a superb hydrator for dry hair and skin. Use organic aloe whenever possible.
Aloe Vera Fillet — Aloe barbadensis. The whole gel-like "fillet" removed from the aloe leaf. An excellent skin soother and hydrator.
Alpha Lipoic Acid — Thioctic acid. Powerful antioxidant and antiinflammatory obtained from potatoes. Used in anti-wrinkle lotions and moisturizers for its protective effects on skin.
Amino Acids — Amino acids are "the building blocks" that make up proteins. Because proteins are necessary to every living cell and are involved in every major process in the body, amino acids are essential to health. Of the roughly 28 known amino acids, 80 percent are manufactured by the body. The others, known as essential amino acids, must be obtained from the diet. Amino acids support proteins in the skin (collagen, elastin, etc.) and, used in certain combinations, help regulate oil production in the skin and scalp. Human hair is made up of 18 amino acids, which is why many quality hair care products contain them. (See also Amino Acid Complex.)
Amino Acid Complex (Cystine, Cysteine, Methionine) - Sulfur-rich amino acids essential to protein metabolism, very nourishing to the hair and skin. Together they help balance and normalize the skin and scalp.
Aminobenzoic Acid - (See PABA.)
Angelica - The dried leaves of this herb are very aromatic. Angelica oil and angelica wax are good skin care ingredients.
Annatto -Waxy extract from the herb Bixa orellana, used as a natural color. (See also Bixane Herb.)
Apple Oil - Extracted from the peel of apples and combined with the juice from the pulp. Contains malic acid, an antioxidant and natural pH adjuster. Has a pleasant fragrance.
Apricot, Apricot Kernel Oil - Natural oil from apricot pits, also known as persic oil. An emollient similar in composition to almond oil, it has a softening effect on the skin.
Aristolochia - Known for its conditioning and soothing properties on the skin. An excellent overnight cream ingredient.
Arnica Oil - Oil rich in fatty acids and vitamins A, B, C and D, used in hair tonics and massage preparations for its nourishing and smoothing properties. Combined with vitamin E, it is an excellent natural deodorant.
Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C) - A powerful antioxidant and skin nutrient (see also Ester-C®). I also use vitamin C in my natural preservative blend (see Citrus Seed Extract).
Avocado Oil - Easily absorbed by the skin and scalp. A good source of vitamins A, D and E, amino acids and sterols. Herbalists traditionally have used avocado oil in hair and scalp preparations. It is very soothing and calming for skin and scalp.
Balm-mint - Very mild extract, ideal for sensitive skin and skin prone to rashes and other allergic reactions. An excellent skin soother.
Balsam, Balsam Tolu - Used in hair conditioners, soaps, creams and lotions for their mild freshening properties and pleasant fragrance.
Beet Extract - The extract or juice of beets, used as a natural red color.
Benzoin Gum, Benzoin Bark - A skin tonic and freshener with antioxidant and preservative properties. Promotes healthy skin and scalp.
Bilberry Fruit - (See Fruit Acids.)
Biotin - Also known as vitamin H, biotin is part of the B vitamin group. It is an important factor in the growth of tissue and the proper functioning of the oil glands. A biotin deficiency can lead to dry skin, seborrheic dermatitis and the formation of dandruff and crusts in the scalp. Biotin is vital for the maintenance of a normal fat metabolism, and is essential for healthy skin and scalp.
Biting Clematis - Though this herb can be toxic when taken internally, applied topically, it is a calming agent for the skin.
Bixane Herb - The red waxy material in the seeds of the Bixa orellana, a shrub found in South America. It is a natural reddish-brown color, but when mixed with an acid, becomes a deep red. Used as a natural color. (See also Annatto.)
Black Currant Extract - See Fruit Acids.)
Bladderwrack - An algae high in iodine, often used in massage lotions, creams and foaming bath oils. A skin tonic and nutrient.
Blueberry Leaves - The leaves of the blueberry make a mild, soothing tea that is an excellent, non-drying skin tonic.
Bluebottle - A moisturizing agent for the skin.
Blue Camomile - A rare form of camomile organically grown in Morocco, excellent in shampoos and hair treatments for its softening, emollient properties. A freshener and tonic, very soothing to scalp and skin.
Blue Cypress Oil - Essential oil widely used in Australia for its woody fragrance and germ-zapping properties. A natural disinfectant and freshener, blue cypress oil makes an excellent addition to bath products and room deodorizers.
Blue Green Algae - Made up of 50% to 70% utilizable protein, blue green algae is an excellent food, used for thousands of years for its mild taste and easily assimilated nutrients. A good source of enzymes, minerals, trace minerals and antioxidants, its amino acid profile is virtually identical to that of humans, which makes it more readily absorbed by the skin. Used in hair care products for its protein content, it helps revitalize and condition dull, damaged hair.
Blue Mallow - An emollient. Its skin-softening properties make it an excellent addition to creams, lotions and facial masks for dry skin. Is sometimes used as an eye wash for tired eyes.
Borage Oil - Nutrient-dense oil high in rare gamma-linolenic acid, also found in human breast milk. Combined with Rosa Mosqueta® oil and alfalfa extract, it makes an excellent ingredient for dry or mature skin.
Burdock - A freshener and soothing agent. Its essential oil smooths and revitalizes the hair and promotes a healthy scalp. An excellent ingredient in conditioners, anti-frizz hair care products and styling aids for coarse, curly, hard-to-handle hair.
Cade Tar - Scalp cleanser and toner, used by European herbalists to help clear and condition the scalp. Today coal tar, a dangerous petrochemical, is generally used in its place in many mass produced hair care products.
Calaguala Fern Extract - Used by Mayan Indians in skin and scalp preparations as far back as 350 B.C. This soothing herbal smooths and conditions the skin and helps clear and tone the scalp and remove buildup.
Calamine - A natural blend of zinc oxide and a small amount of ferric oxide, used in skin lotions, ointments and liniments for its calming properties on the skin.
Calendula - The common Marigold (Calendula officinalis), a known skin tonic and freshener. It is a frequent ingredient in ointments and in natural deodorants. Sometimes used as a natural yellow color.
Camomile - A softening agent for rough, dry skin, used since ancient times for its sedative and emollient effects. Its soothing and hydrating properties also work well on the hair and scalp. (See also Roman Camomile; Blue Camomile.)
Camphor Oil - A tonic and freshener used in small amounts in lotions and creams for its cooling and soothing effects.
Canadian Willowherb - Soothing agent shown in clinical studies to work faster and better than many hydrocortisone creams. A superb skin care ingredient.
Carmine - The natural red color obtained from the cochineal, an insect that feeds on the cactus plant.
Carotene (Provitamin A) - Orange or red compounds that occur in plants or in the bodies of plant-eating animals, which are precursors to vitamin A. Essential for skin health.
Carragahenin, Carrageenan - A seaweed high in sulfur and very nourishing to the skin. A natural stabilizer, binding agent and emulsifier. Also known as Irish moss, it has been used in food and medicines in India for hundreds of years. Is similar to fucus and other seaweeds in fragrance and color.
Carrot Oil - Rich in beta carotene and vitamins A and E, highly beneficial to hair and skin. Applied topically, it helps balance and normalize dry scalp and skin.
Castile - (See Olive Oil Castile.)
Cayenne Pepper Oil - Its active ingredient, capsaicin, the chemical responsible for making peppers hot, is an excellent warming agent for massage lotions and liniments. Applied topically, it soothes tight, overworked muscles and tension.
Cedarwood Extract - A natural fragrance.
Centaury (Century Herb) - Used in cosmetics to even out skin tones and smooth the skin. Often used as a natural color.
Chestnut Extract - Used as a natural brown color in makeup formulas.
Chinese Golden Thread - An herb very similar to goldenseal, but four times higher in its active constituent berberine.
Chlorella - A seaweed often used as a skin hydrator. Combined with other seaweeds (sea ware, laminaria and bladderwrack), it is a key ingredient in vegetarian overnight creams like our Vegacell Herbal Cellular Complex.
Chrysanthemum - Often called pellitory or Persian pellitory. A natural freshener and skin revitalizer.
Cinnamon - A fragrant spice, used as a coloring agent in natural makeup powders.
Citric Acid - An extract from citrus fruits used as a natural pH adjuster in cosmetics.
Citrus Seed Extract - My own natural preservative blend, composed of grapefruit seed extract, vitamins A, C and E (as well as Neem oil for maximum effectiveness). It extends the shelf life of product by no less than one year, and sometimes as much as three years, depending on the product.
Clove Oil-Soothing agent. Herbalists often recommend this fragrant herb for sensitive teeth and gums.
Coconut Fatty Acids-Also known as Vitamin F, which contains linoleic, linolenic and arachidonic acids, the essential fatty acids. In my Coconut Fatty Acid Base, they are combined with organic aloe vera and vitamins A, C and E.
Coconut Fatty Alcohols-The long-chain fatty alcohols from coconut palm kernels, which are natural emollients. Synthetic versions of cetyl alcohol are often used in commercial formulations and should be avoided. I use natural fatty acids combined with natural fatty alcohols in my Coconut Fatty Acid Base and Essential Fatty Acid Base, then combine them with other cosmetic bases as needed.
Coconut Milk-The milk from coconuts, a natural hair and skin emollient.
Coconut Oil-A rich emollient naturally converted into a soap through a saponification reaction with salt. Beware of cosmetics that bill themselves as "natural" and use a synthetically processed derivative, sodium lauryl sulfate, claiming it comes "from coconut oil." Accept nothing but the real thing in its natural form.
Collagen-(See Soluble Collagen.)
Coltsfoot-High in silicic acid and the amino acid cystine, present in the hair protein keratin. Cystine, applied topically, is known to help strengthen and smooth the hair shaft and promote hair health. It is also a superb skin nutrient.
Comfrey-A source of allantoin and mucopolysaccharides, used in celltherapy treatments. Soothing and moisturizing. (See also Allantoin.)
Coneflower-A superb moisturizer for the skin.
Coprah-(See Coconut Fatty Acids.)
Corn Oil Soap-Mild, natural soap, very gentle on the hair and skin. I sometimes combine it with coconut oil soap in natural shampoos and bath products.
Corn Syrup-A natural emulsifier, it also helps protect hair from chlorine and salt water damage.
Cucumber-Used in facial creams, lotions and cleansers for its skin-freshening and cooling properties.
Deionized Water - Purified water that has had ions removed. The deionization process also removes nitrates, calcium, magnesium and heavy metals.
Desert Herb Complex - Unique hair care herbal blend, consisting of organic jojoba and aloe and yucca root extract. (For more information on these ingredients, see individual entries.)
Earth Smoke (Fumitory)-A superb tonic and skin and scalp freshener. Combined with ginkgo leaf, it has been shown to improve hair permeability. We include earth smoke in our Mandarin Magic hair and skin care line.
Echinacea Purpurea-Versatile herb used both internally and externally in folk medicine to treat a variety of ills. We use cultivated, certified organic Echinacea Purpurea* in our Blue Cypress Winter Bath, a warming bath oil popular during cold and flu season.
Echinacea Root Oil-Used in celltherapy treatments and overnight skin creams to improve texture and smooth the skin.
Egg Oil-The extract from whole eggs, rich in natural emulsifiers. An excellent emollient and humectant featured in shampoos, rinses and conditioners for dry or damaged hair for its soothing and moisturizing properties. In skin care products, it improves texture and soothes and hydrates skin without clogging the pores.
Elastin-One of the three main proteins found in the skin (along with collagen and reticulin). Applied topically, it helps attract and retain moisture and smooth and soften the skin.
Elder Blossoms (Elder Flowers, Elder Berries) - Essential oil high in fatty acids (66%) and very beneficial to the hair and skin.
English Lavender Glycerin - (See Lavender Oil.)
Essential Fatty Acid Base - Rich in linoleic, linolenic and arachidonic acids (vitamin F), this base also contains the essential amino acids cysteine, cystine and methionine, which are high in sulfur and very beneficial to the hair and skin. The essential fatty acid base is blended with fatty alcohols from palm kernels, organic aloe vera, and vitamins A, C and E.
Essential Fatty Acid and Dermal Protein Base - Aubreys Organics special herbal/protein base consisting of:

ESTER-C® - A patented form of vitamin C clinically shown to retain its potency longer than other forms. A powerful antioxidant, vitamin C is very beneficial to the skin. (Ester-C® is a registered trademark of Inter-Cal Corporation.)
Eucalyptus - Fragrant oil used in cleansers, massage formulations and bath oils for its freshening properties and cooling, soothing effect on the skin.
Evening Primrose Oil - A superb emollient and skin nutrient, high in essential fatty acids. A source of rare gamma-linolenic acid, also found in human breast milk. Extremely beneficial for dry skin and scalp.
Evergreen Oil - The oil extracted from the leaves of the evergreen magnolia. A mild skin tonic, similar to cucumber oil, it has a cooling effect on the skin. (See also Magnolia Blossoms.)
Eyebright - A tonic and freshener.
Fatty Acid Esters - Esters are waxes derived from plants and animals, which are less greasy than fatty acid extracts. Cetyl alcohols from coconut palm kernels and lanolin from wool are examples of fatty acid esters. Used in absorption bases and as emulsifiers in cosmetics.
Fennel - Rich in oleic and linoleic acids, essential fatty acids. It has a smoothing and softening effect on the skin.
Feverfew - Topically applied, a tincture of feverfew is very calming and soothing to the skin.
Forsythia Fruit - A soothing agent for the skin. The Chinese call it Lien-chiao.
Fruit Acids - A group of acids naturally occurring in fruits and herbs, used in cosmetics to clear and smooth the complexion. Alpha-hydroxy acids is the patented trade name for fruit acids, which are synthetically derived in most commercial formulations. (Alpha-hydroxy acids are now common ingredients in cosmetics, but were originally used as solvents in cleaning compounds and for tanning leather.) I use only fruit acids from natural sources in my productsmalic, citric and lactic acids). Individual fruit acids are used in various products for their exfoliating and skin revitalizing properties, but fruit acids as a group are featured in our Apricot & Amidroxy products.
Fucus - A seaweed rich in alginic acid, amino acids, polysaccharides, minerals and vitamins. Its essential oil is a stimulant and tonic, often used in massage lotions and some hair and scalp care products.
Geranium Oil - A natural cleanser and skin freshener, sometimes also used as a fragrance.
German Camomile-(See Camomile.)
Ginger-A stimulant, its warming properties are very beneficial to the skin. Sometimes used as a fragrance. In both powdered and liquid form, it is an excellent ingredient for bath oils and other cosmetics.
Ginkgo Leaf (Ginkgo biloba)-This ancient Chinese herb has been used in skin care preparations since 2,800 B.C. Combined with earth smoke in hair care products, it has been shown to improve hair permeability and scalp health. Ginkgo is featured in our Mandarin Magic line.
Ginseng Root-One of the most prized herbs in China, an important tonic used in overnight creams and other hair and skin care products.
Glycolic Acid-A fruit acid from sugar cane often used as a peeling agent by dermatologists. (See also Fruit Acids.)
Glyco-Protein (Glycogen and Polysaccharides) -Glycogen (derived from oyster shells) and polysaccharides are natural starches that can be quickly converted into protein, vital nutrient highly beneficial to the hair.
Goa Herb -Its chemical affinity to the keratin elements of the skin make this herb an excellent ingredient in preparations for oily type skin. A calming agent and skin normalizer.
Grain Alcohol - (See Natural Grain Alcohol.)
Grape Seed Extract - One of the most powerful antioxidants around, high in proanthocyanidins, a group of bioflavonoids superior to most because they are water soluble and much more easily assimilated by the body. A hard-working free-radical scavenger, it prevents skin cell damage caused by sun exposure and pollution.
Grapefruit Seed Extract - A natural preservative. (See Citrus Seed Extract.)
Green Tea - A powerful antioxidant, 20 times stronger than vitamin E. Helps prevents free radical damage caused by sun exposure and pollution and protect and revitalize the skin. Used in creams, lotions and suncare products, it is very soothing and moisturizing.
Gum Arabic - An herbal gum used as a thickener and emulsifier in creams and lotions, and as a hair set in styling gels and sprays. Often combined with Gum Tragacanth.
Gum Tragacanth - An herbal gum frequently used as a thickener and binding agent in creams and lotions, and as a setting agent in hair sprays and gels. Gum Arabic and gum tragacanth are both natural alternatives to synthetic polymers such as PVP, found in most commercial hair products.
Hamamelis Water - A witch hazel extract, very soothing and cooling to the skin.
Hematite - A natural mineral used as a color in face powders and makeups.
Henna - A rich conditioner and humectant, henna has been a staple in shampoos and hair rinses for thousands of years. We use neutral, non-coloring henna in our Egyptian Henna Shampoo and Egyptian Henna Hair Rinse.
Honey - Used as a thickening agent in cosmetics, it gives body to facial masks.
Honeysuckle Oil - Known for its sweet fragrance. An excellent cleanser and refresher, used in facial creams, shampoos and soaps. We combine this soothing, aromatic oil with Rosa Mosqueta® in our exclusive Honeysuckle Rose® line.
Hops - A sedative and skin softener.
Horse Chestnut - A mild freshener often found in massage lotions. Used in products for sensitive skin for its sedative properties.
Horsetail - Often used in conjunction with coltsfoot in hair care products. High in silicic acid and the sulfur-rich amino acid cystine. It helps normalize and balance the skin and scalp.
Indigofera (Indigo Blue) - A safe, natural plant color (deep blue to purple) and skin freshener.
Inositol - Naturally occurring in lecithin, this B vitamin is produced by the body in greater quantities than any other nutrient. Essential for cell respiration, it helps maintain scalp health. (Also see Vitamin B-complex.)
Iodides - Compounds containing iodine, naturally occurring in plants that grow in the sea. Applied topically, it is an excellent cleanser and refresher.
Ivy - Often found in massage lotions for its skin-toning properties. Contains saponins (natural foaming agents).
Jasmine - The essential oil of this aromatic flower, widely used in aromatherapy for its calming effect. A popular herbal medicine in China, often used as a natural fragrance in cosmetics and perfumes.
Jojoba Butter - A natural butter made from jojoba oil. An excellent skin emollient.
Jojoba Meal - High in protein and natural fibers, this byproduct of the oil-rich jojoba plant contains 17 amino acids. Its mild exfoliating properties help wipe away dead skin cells and nourish and deep-cleanse the complexion without drying it out.
Jojoba Oil- This rich extract helps the jojoba desert plant retain water during the long summer drought. When used in cosmetic preparations, it not only acts as a humectant, but actually creates a protective film over the skin and hair shaft that helps keep moisture in. Highly effective on dry skin and split ends. We use only organic jojoba oil in our products.
Jojoba Wax - A natural wax made from jojoba oil.
Juniper Berries - Excellent toners, their essential oil is very soothing to the skin.
Kaolin (Mt. Kaolin Clay) - A fine, natural clay from Mt. Kaolin, China, known for its drawing properties. Excellent in deep-cleansing face masks.
Karite Butter - (See Shea Butter.)
Kava Kava - A mild sedative used in the South Pacific as an aid in meditation. Applied to the skin, kava kava soothes overworked muscles and tension.
Kelp - A seaweed high in iodine and vitamins A, B-complex, C and E. A skin and scalp nutrient, soothing and toning.
Kukui Nut Oil - The natural oil of the kukui nut from Hawaii. A natural moisturizer often blended with other oils in skin care preparations.
Lactalbumin - A natural milk protein high in lactic acid and containing the eight amino acids, it has been labeled "the most perfect protein." I use it in hair conditioners for dry or damaged hair.
Lactic Acid - An acid naturally occurring in milk, which produces pH levels like those of the hair and skin. An rich moisturizer.
Laminaria - A seaweed whose essential oil helps attract and retain moisture on the skin. An excellent humectant and nutrient.
Lanolin - The oil obtained from the wool of sheep, used as an absorption base in moisturizers and hair products.
Lavender Oil - Added to ointments and creams for its sedative and cleansing properties. We use oil extracts of both English lavender and lavender from France.
Lecithin - A vegetable extract high in natural fatty acids.
Lemon, Lemon Oil - A skin freshener with antioxidant properties, often used in cosmetics for its cool, pleasant fragrance. Lemon oil is obtained from the peel of the lemon.
Lemon Grass - A freshener often used as a fragrance. Has antioxidant properties.
Lime Tree - Also known as Linden Tree, its flowers contain an essential oil--farnesol--similar to aloe and camomile. An emollient and soothing agent for the skin.
Liquid Protein - (See Vegetable Protein.)
Macadamia Nut Oil - We use the natural oil from this Hawaiian nut in many of our products for its emollient properties.
Magnesium - A mineral essential for nutrition and absorption of calcium and vitamin C. Applied topically, it helps balance and normalize the skin and scalp.
Magnolia Blossoms - The essential oil of magnolia, used in fragrances and as a natural tonic for the hair and skin.
Mandarin Orange Peel - (See Sweet Orange Peel.)
Mango Butter - The butter of the mango fruit, similar to jojoba butter. An excellent moisturizer.
Manuka Oil - eptospermum scoparium. Analgesic, antifungal and antibacterial. Used by New Zealand's Maori people for its medicinal properties, this herbal oil has five times the antiseptic properties of tea tree oil and has a pleasant, honey-like fragrance.
Marigold - (See Calendula.)
Marshmallow Root - Rich emollient that softens and protects the skin.
Menthol - Derived from peppermint, menthol's warming/cooling properties have a soothing effect on the skin.
Milk Thistle - Clinical studies have shown its active compound -- silymarin, a flavonoid with strong antioxidant propertiesVery soothing to the skin and scalp.
Mineral - Herb Complex - Aubrey Organics own special blend of herbs and minerals, consisting of:

Mineral Water - We use pure mineral water in some products. It is the main base for our popular facial spray Sparkling Mineral Water Herbal Complexion Mist.
Mint - A natural refresher, its cooling and soothing properties make it a good ingredient for cleansers and astringents. Sometimes used as a fragrance.
Mistletoe - Known for its soothing properties on sensitive skin. It is often combined with fennel, hops, camomile, balm-mint and yarrow in skin formulations.
Morus Root - A superb tonic, this Chinese herbal is a key ingredient in our Mandarin Magic line.
Mucopolysaccharides - (From aloe vera.) Plant or animal substances which bind with water to form the thick, jelly-like material that cements cells together. Used in skin and hair care formulations for their ability to retain water. (We use only natural, organically-grown aloe vera.)
Myrrh - A superb stimulant and skin tonic. Its mild, skin-freshening action is ideal for sensitive skin. Often used as a fragrance.
Myrtle Herb Extract - An aromatic stimulant and mild tonic sometimes used in sun care preparations for its beneficial effect on sun-exposed skin.
Myrtus Leaf Extract - A natural skin tonic. Sometimes used as a fragrance.
Natural Flower Oil - Oil obtained from flowers to create perfumes free of chemical additives. A natural fragrance.
Natural Grain Alcohol - A powerful antiseptic, naturally obtained through the fermenting of carbohydrates in grains. (Many cosmetic formulations contain isopropyl alcohol, a petrochemical that's much cheaper to use, and very harsh and drying to the skin.)
Natural Moisturizing Factor - Special formulation combining potassium, calcium and essential fatty acids (vitamin F) with lactic acid, an acid naturally occurring in milk, which produces pH levels like those of the hair and skin.
Nettle - An excellent tonic, high in phosphates and trace minerals. Very beneficial and nourishing to the scalp.
Niacin - Vitamin B-3. (See Vitamin B-complex.)
Oatmeal - A natural cleanser and toner, its mild exfoliating action makes it an excellent addition to facial masks. It helps smooth and soothe the complexion and even out skin tones.
Olive Oil Castile - Saponified with salt, it becomes an excellent, mild soap. A natural emollient.
Orange Blossom Extract - The fragrant oil obtained from orange blossom, which contains an orange-flower fragrance.
Oregano Oil - Powerful skin cleanser and freshener. Helps promote skin health.
PABA (Aminobenzoic acid) - A water-soluble B vitamin that acts as a skin nutrient and sun protector, screening out the sun¹s harmful rays. PABA is the only natural sunscreen recognized by the FDA. While some suffer allergic reactions to its synthetic forms, I have found most people are able to tolerate natural, food-grade PABA, the only kind we use in our suncare products.
PABA Plant Extract - My own formulation consisting of: Willow Bark, Myrtle Herb, Myrtus Leaf, PABA (Aminobenzoic acid)-Vitamin B-5 Blend and Organic Aloe Vera Gel (For more information on these ingredients, see individual entries.)
Palm Oil - Obtained from palm kernels, this rich oil is similar to coconut oil. Naturally saponified, it makes an excellent, mild soap.
Panthenol (Vitamin B-5) - A natural hair thickener that helps give hair body and hold. An excellent scalp nutrient and hydrator, also beneficial to the skin. It is sometimes known as Pantothenic Acid.
Papaya - An excellent skin softener.
Passion Flower - Its roots and leaves are used in skin care formulations for their soothing and conditioning properties.
Peanut Oil - An excellent emollient often used in natural massage oils.
Pectin - Obtained from the cell walls of plants, the peel of citrus and the crushed pulp of apples. Used as a thickening agent in natural cosmetics.
Pellitory - of-the-Wall-Herbal extract known for its moisturizing and emollient effects. We combine it with the mallows, elder and arnica in many of our natural moisturizers.
Pennyroyal - A member of the mint family, pennyroyal is a strong freshener and natural insect deterrent, often used in pet care formulas. A key ingredient in our Organimals line of pet grooming products.
Peppermint Oil - An excellent freshener frequently used in shampoos and rinses for its toning effect on the scalp. Very soothing and cooling to the skin.
Pine Needle Oil - Extract from the needle of Dwarf, Scotch and Siberian pines. A natural freshener, it is sometimes added as a fragrance.
Pine Tar - Soothing agent for dry, chapped skin.
Pine-tree - The extract of pine tree leaves is blended with witch hazel, red vine and other herbals for its tonic effect on the skin. Combined with hops, rosemary and horsetail, it makes an excellent celltherapy moisturizer.
Polyvalent Tissue Extracts - The term "polyvalent" refers to phytotherapy skin care treatments for sensitive skin. Polyvalent tissue extracts are used in celltherapy creams, often combined with skin-conditioning herbals such as fennel, hops, camomile, balm-mint, mistletoe and yarrow. Queen's Meadow - Also known as Lady of the Meadow and meadowsweet, it was considered a sacred plant by the Druids. Used in cosmetics for sensitive skin for its mild, tonic effect.
Quillaya Bark - A natural soap with excellent foaming and cleansing abilities containing 9-10% saponins. Used in shampoos, it helps keep scalp clear and healthy.
Red Vine - Soothing herbal known for its smoothing and conditioning properties. It is combined with St. John's wort, arnica, witch hazel, horse chestnut and ivy in many of my skin care products.
Reticulin - One of the three main proteins found in the skin, often used in overnight creams for its ability to attract and retain moisture.
Riboflavin - Vitamin B-2, part of the vitamin B-complex.
Roman Camomile Oil - Known for its sedative and emollient properties, its use in hair and skin care goes back to ancient times. Recommended for all hair types for its soothing properties. Brings out highlights in lighter hair.
Rosa Mosqueta® Rose Hip Seed Oil - Oil from the rose hips of a rare rose that grows in Chile's Andes mountains. High in vitamin C, and linoleic and linolenic acids, essential fatty acids necessary for skin cell regeneration, it has been used by South American Indians for hundreds of years for its healing and moisturizing properties. Clinical tests have shown that Rosa Mosqueta®, applied regularly, helps fade scarring and skin discolorations and encourage skin cell growth. There's no better moisturizer for dry or mature skin and brittle, damaged hair.
Rosemary - Toner and freshener, it adds body and softness to lackluster hair. Used in hair rinses, it tones and conditions the scalp and helps remove scalp buildup.
Rosewater - A water-based dilution of the essence of roses, used in cosmetics since the 10th century.
Safflower Oil — Carthamus tinctorius. Cold-pressed from safflower seeds. Rich in skin-soothing oleic acid and vitamin E.
Sage Oil - A purifier and tonic, its antibacterial action makes it ideal for sensitive skin or scalp and antidandruff preparations. It is often combined with rosemary in hair and skin care products, and like rosemary, it has antioxidant properties and is very beneficial to the skin and scalp.
Sandalwood Oil - One of the oldest fragrance components, this aromatic essential oil has been in use for over 4000 years for its deep, woody, long-lasting scent. In recent years, the Indian sandalwood tree has become endangered. We use only farmed, sustainable Australian sandalwood in our products.
Saponin - Natural glycosides that foam in water. A mild, natural detergent.
Sarsaparilla Root - A mild, natural detergent and skin freshener. Contains saponins.
Sea Buckthorn Oil - Richest herbal source of antioxidant vitamins E and A (beta carotene and other carotenoids), which help prevent the formation of free radicals. This nourishing oil is also high in essential fatty acids, particularly rare palmitoleic acid, a constituent of the skin¹s sebum. Sea Herbal Complex-Special blend of herbals from the sea consisting of: Seaweed Extract, Sea Ware Herb and Sea Salts. (For more information on these ingredients, see individual entries.)
Sea Salts - Obtained from seaweeds, they are used in bath products for their tonic action.
Sea Ware Herb - One of the popular seaweeds used in facial cleansers and creams. It has a toning effect on the skin, particularly when combined with other seaweeds. In facial cleansers it reacts with the oils to form a natural soap.
Seaweed Extracts - Special blend of herbal extracts from the sea, usually consisting of variations of the following: bladderwrack, carrageenan (seaweed gum), iodides and laminaria. (For more information on these, see individual entries.)
Selenium - Micronutrient mineral with strong antioxidant properties, very soothing to the scalp. Included in shampoos and rinses for problem hair, it helps remove buildup and help keep scalp clear and healthy with continued use. I use it in small amounts, as it can be irritating to the eyes.
Sesame Oil — Sesamum indicum. Similar to avocado oil, this rich emollient is high in linoleic and oleic fatty acids. Often used as a carrying agent for other ingredients in cosmetic formulations.
Shea Butter - Moisture-rich butter obtained from the nuts of the Mangifolia tree in Central Africa, also known as karite butter and African butter. A superb emollient, ideal in skin moisturizers, sun care products and hair conditioners.
Siberian Pine Needle Oil - Skin freshener, also used for its cool, natural fragrance.
Silica — A mineral used in creams and lotions as a thickener and stabilizer. In suncare products, it works synergistically to increase the efficiency of sunscreen ingredients. Like talc, silica can cause serious damage to the lungs when the dry ingredient is inhaled, but is safe when applied topically.
Silk Powder - Used in makeup powders to even out skin tones and leave the complexion soft and smooth. Obtained from silk threads, it is high in amino acids and vitamin E.
Skullcap - Mild tonic and stimulant with antioxidant and antimicrobial properties. Very beneficial to hair and scalp.
Soap Bark, Soap Root - (See Quillaya Bark and Yucca Root.)
Sodium Cocoate — Coconut oil (Cocos nucifera) saponified with an alkaline salt. A lathering agent in soaps. (See also Coconut Oil.)
Soluble Collagen - This dermal protein makes up 70% of the skin's connective tissue. Applied topically, pure soluble (non-cross-linked) collagen is readily absorbed and helps skin retain moisture and softness.
Soya Protein - Vegetable protein from soy. Applied topically, it is an excellent hydrator, readily absorbed by the skin for improved texture. In hair care formulas, it combines with fatty acids and amino acids to coat porous or damaged hair and split-ends. (See also Vegetable Protein.)
Sodium Hyaluronate — A naturally occurring glycosaminoglycan (polysaccharide) derived from beneficial bacteria. Used in skin care preparations to helps attract and retain moisture.
Sodium Hydroxide — An alkaline salt obtained when electrolysis (positive and negative poles) is applied to sea water or salt water. Chlorine collects at the positive pole, and sodium hydroxide collects at the negative pole.
Sodium Palmitate — Palm oil saponified with an alkaline salt. Primarily responsible for the hardness and durability of bar soaps. (See also Palm Oil.)
Sodium PCA — Salt of glutamic acid, an amino acid that occurs widely in food. Used in appropriate concentrations, it acts as a humectant to help attract and retain moisture to the skin.
Sorbitol — A white, sweet, crystalline alcohol found in certain berries and fruits. Used as a moisturizing agent, and as a sugar substitute.
Soy Protein — See Hydrolyzed Soy Protein
Soybean Oil - A good emollient high in linoleic, oleic, linolenic and palmitic acids, essential fatty acids necessary for healthy skin.
Squalene - A saturated hydrocarbon found in human sebum, added to cosmetics for its emollient and bactericidal properties. Squalane is typically obtained from shark liver oil, but the identical substance can be derived from olives. Olive oil squalane is more stable and much more compatible with the skin than its shark-derived counterpart.
St. John's Wort - Although this calming herb is best known as a natural antidepressant, its oil form is an excellent emollient and skin softener, widely used in sun and skin care products for its healing properties on dry, irritated skin. Also beneficial to damaged hair and dry scalp. Not phototoxic when used topically.
Sunflower Oil - The extract from sunflower seeds, a rich emollient high in linoleic and oleic essential fatty acids. A good base for massage oils and lotions.
Sweet Almond Oil — Excellent emollient high in oleic, linoleic and other fatty acids, ideal in the treatment of very dry skin. Soothing and moisturizing. A good absorption base.
Sweet Orange Oil — Essential oil expressed from the peel of sweet oranges (Navel, Jaffa, Valencia). An antiinflammatory, antibacterial and antifungal used for its refreshing properties and pleasant scent. Contains flavonoids and vitamins A, B, C and E..
Sweet Orange Peel - Contains flavonoids and vitamins A, B, C and E. (See also Orange Oil.)
Tea Tree Oil - Essential oil with powerful antiseptic and germicidal properties, similar to eucalyptus oil. Due to its strong odor, it must be used in small amounts in cosmetics, but makes an excellent addition to dandruff shampoos and therapeutic masks and moisturizers.
Titanium Dioxide - A naturally occurring mineral that actually deflects the sun's burning rays off the skin, offering significant protection from damaging UVA/UVB rays. Often combined with Padimate O, it is a superb ingredient for sunblocks.
Tofu — Derived from soybeans, this rich plant food is high in protein, calcium, B vitamins and other nutrients beneficial to hair, scalp and skin. An excellent addition to absorption bases.
Topical Ester-C® — See Ester-C®.
Vegetable Glycerine - Rich humectant, emollient and lubricant naturally extracted from vegetable oils, used in cosmetic formulations for thousands of years. (Synthetic glycerine, derived from propylene alcohol, is highly irritating to the skin and scalp and should be avoided.)
Vegetable Protein - Termed "the building block of life," protein is our most important food, a leading source of vitamins and essential amino acids. Generally found in meats, eggs and dairy products, protein can also be obtained from soy, wheat and other plant sources. Applied topically, vegetable protein is an excellent hydrator, readily absorbed by the skin for improved texture. In hair care formulas, it combines with fatty acids and amino acids to coat porous or damaged hair and split-ends.
Vetiver — Soothing essential oil used in cosmetics for its smoky, earthy scent. Due to its sedative properties, in India it is known as "oil of tranquility."
Violet — Viola odorata. Analgesic and soothing agent very beneficial to sensitive skin. Contains salicylic acid. The flower extract, combined with other oils and extracts, is often used as a fragrance.
Vitamin A - Antioxidant vitamin widely used (both internally and topically) in the treatment of acne and other skin conditions. Its topical application promotes the formation of new skin cells and helps regulate oil secretion in the sebaceous glands. Particularly beneficial for dry or sun-exposed skin, it is often found in sun protection creams for its antioxidant properties and its soothing and hydrating effect on the skin. (A deficiency of vitamin A in the body reduces the mucopolysaccharides in the skin, which accelerates the skin's aging process.) Also used as a natural preservative in cosmetics.
Vitamin B-complex (Herbal) - Water soluble vitamins that when applied topically, help balance and normalize the skin and keep it clear and healthy. Since B vitamins are the regulators of the metabolic functions of our body, they are important to skin cell respiration. Calcium D-pantothenate and inositol are the two B-complex vitamins most beneficial to skin and hair health. (See also Inositol and Panthenol.)
Vitamin B-5 - (See Panthenol.)
Vitamin C — Powerful antioxidant and nutrient, very beneficial to the skin. Plays an essential role in building collagen, the connective tissue that makes up 70 percent of our skin. Vitamin C is also a natural preservative, protecting both the oil and water phases of cosmetics. (See also Ester-C®.)
Vitamin E— (d-Alpha Tocopherol) The most potent antioxidant vitamin around, it protects skin from cancer-causing free radicals and is essential for proper utilization of oxygen in the tissues. In cosmetics it also acts as a natural preservative, protecting the oil phase in creams and lotions.
Vitamin F — Skin protector and revitalizer consisting of linoleic and linolenic acids, the two essential fatty acids. Used in moisturizers, it soothes rough, dry or chapped skin on contact and helps soften and revitalize dry or damaged hair. (See also Coconut Fatty Acid Cream Base.)

Walnut Extract — Tonic and astringent, very beneficial to the skin and scalp. Also used as a temporary brown hair color, often in combination with henna.
Walnut Shells — Natural exfoliants used in facial masks. The mild scrubbing action of ground walnut shells helps break up oil deposits and clear away dead skin cells and debris.
Water — See Deionized Water
Watercress — Good source of vitamins A, B-complex and C. Soothing and conditioning, very beneficial to the skin. Also shown to strengthen and thicken hair.
Wheat Germ Oil — Extracted from the embryo of the wheat kernel. An antiinflammatory and skin nourisher that also acts as a natural preservative because of its high vitamin E content.
Wheat Grass —Anti inflammatory used in the treatment of eczema and dermatitis. An ingredient in many preparations for problem skin, and in shampoos and hair conditioners. Contains plant sterols.
Wheat Protein — Water-soluble protein naturally derived from wheat. Applied topically, it helps attract and retain moisture and is clinically proven to minimize fine lines and wrinkles. In hair care formulas, it coats porous and damaged areas to strengthen and mend hair fiber. (See also vegetable protein.)
White Birch Extract — Powdered extract from the bark of the birch tree, rich in betulin and known for its soothing and purifying effect on the skin. Herbalists use it in the treatment of many skin disorders. An excellent addition to sun care products and face creams.
White Camellia Oil — Rich oil extracted from the white camellia flower, cultivated in the villages of China and Japan and used in hair and skin care formulations for thousands of years. A superb moisturizer and nutrient for hair and skin, it has antioxidant properties.
White Clay — See Kaolin.
White Pine Bark — American Indians used this soothing extract in preparations for dry scalp and skin conditions long before coal tar and other petrochemicals were ever used.
Wild Ginger Root — (Nigerian Root) Asarum canadense. Added to bath products and massage lotions for its warming and soothing effect on sore muscles. Also used in small amounts as a fragrance.
Wintergreen Oil — A tonic, stimulant and freshener, this aromatic oil has a "heating" or "warming" action on the muscles and skin. Excellent in body rubs and bath oils, as well as mouthwash and toothpaste formulations. Is very high in salicylic acid.
Witch Hazel — A byproduct of the distillation of the leaves and stems of the plant, this hydrosol or floral water is a natural astringent and tonic. An antiirritant and antiinflammatory, it is an excellent ingredient in facial cleansers, toners and lotions.
Yarrow - Extract from the flower heads of this ancient herbal, a known antiinflammatory and antiirritant. It also adds sheen to the hair and has a firming action on the skin.
Ylang Ylang Oil — Essential oil used for its skin-soothing properties and spicy floral scent.
Yeast - High in protein and B vitamins, added to cosmetics for its nutritional value.
Yucca Root - Mild, natural detergent used in shampoos and soaps for its foaming, cleansing abilities. Contains saponins.
Zinc - Mineral essential for growth and skin health. It is often prescribed orally to help control some forms of acne.
Zinc Oxide — Occurring in nature as zincite, this water-insoluble substance makes an excellent sunblock, protecting skin from UVA and UVB rays.
